Late Cretaceous Vicariance in Gondwanan Amphibians

چکیده
Overseas dispersals are often invoked when Southern Hemisphere terrestrial and freshwater organism phylogenies do not fit the sequence or timing of Gondwana fragmentation. We used dispersal-vicariance analyses and molecular timetrees to show that two species-rich frog groups, Microhylidae and Natatanura, display congruent patterns of spatial and temporal diversification among Gondwanan plates in the Late Cretaceous, long after the presumed major tectonic break-up events. Because amphibians are notoriously salt-intolerant, these analogies are best explained by simultaneous vicariance, rather than by oceanic dispersal. Hence our results imply Late Cretaceous connections between most adjacent Gondwanan landmasses, an essential concept for biogeographic and palaeomap reconstructions.

Vicariant origin of malagasy reptiles supports late cretaceous antarctic land bridge.
Since the acceptance of Wegener's theory of plate tectonics in the 1960s, continental drift vicariance has been proposed as an explanation for pan-Gondwanan faunal distributions. Given the recognition of historical connections among continents, it no longer was necessary to invoke hypotheses of dispersal across nearly insurmountable barriers. The application of continental drift vicariance theo...
متن کاملEvidence for Gondwanan vicariance in an ancient clade of gecko lizards
Vicariance hypotheses of Gondwanan fragmentation have been the prevailing explanation for the distributions of plant and animal taxa in the Southern Hemisphere since the widespread acceptance of plate tectonics in the late, 1960s (Bauer, 1993; Sanmartı́n & Ronquist, 2004). Recently, several molecular studies comparing the timing of cladogenic and vicariant Conservation Biology Graduate Program, ...
متن کاملMolecular and fossil evidence place the origin of cichlid fishes long after Gondwanan rifting
Cichlid fishes are a key model system in the study of adaptive radiation, speciation and evolutionary developmental biology. More than 1600 cichlid species inhabit freshwater and marginal marine environments across several southern landmasses. This distributional pattern, combined with parallels between cichlid phylogeny and sequences of Mesozoic continental rifting, has led to the widely accep...
متن کاملThe Evolutionary and Biogeographic Origin and Diversification of the Tropical Monocot Order Zingiberales
Zingiberales are a primarily tropical lineage of monocots. The current pantropical distribution of the order suggests an historical Gondwanan distribution, however the evolutionary history of the group has never been analyzed in a temporal context to test if the order is old enough to attribute its current distribution to vicariance mediated by the break-up of the supercontinent. Based on a phy...
متن کاملLate Cretaceous Terrestrial Vertebrates from Madagascar: Implications for Latin American Biogeography
The Mahajanga Basin Project, initiated in 1993 and centered in Upper Cretaceous strata of northwestern Madagascar, has resulted in the discovery of some of the most complete, well-preserved, and significant specimens of Late Cretaceous vertebrate animals from the Southern Hemisphere and indeed the world. Among the most important finds are various specimens of crocodyliforms, non-avian dinosaurs...
